Dog walkers to face fines if their leads are too long!

June 17th, 2010 by Sally

Dog walkers will face fines of up to £1000 if they walk their pets on leads which are longer than six foot eight inches. It is not uncommon to see dogs on long leads as it gives pets a bit of freedom, without their owners having to worry that they are going to run off.
Wardens are targeting people in areas of Greater Manchester. The measure is being enforced by Tameside Council in Ashtonunder-Lyne and neighbouring towns under a dog control order covering a number of parks and fields. It is thought to be the first area outside of London to be imposing this measure. Pet owners across Tameside have voiced their concerns about the new rules.

Protect your pets in the heat

May 30th, 2010 by Peter

We’ve only just had a glimpse of it over last weekend but as summer starts please make sure you’re wary of how your pets are reacting.

You need to makes sure that they are kept cool by ensuring they have access to a shady area and also hydrated so make sure fresh water is on hand for them to help themselves as and when they need to.

Keep windows open in cars when you’re traveling if possible (but be careful of dogs hanging their heads out as this could damage theirs ears and eye) and most certainly DO NOT leave dogs unattended in a car on a hot and sunny day.

Be careful walking in the middle of the day as hot pavements can burn paws but this is rarely the case in th uK – but you just never know how hot this summer could end up being.

Fitted collars

May 29th, 2010 by Peter

Seems a silly thing to advise but when you’ve put a new collar on your pet – vets are urging for you to ensure that they are fitted correctly. Many collars are fitted when they are young – dogs in particular but then as they grow the fact that the collar needs to be adjusted to be made bigger.

It’s advised by vets and animal experts alike thta when fitting a collar that you should be able to slip 2 fingers under it and if you can’t then it should be replaced with a new one that you can.

A tight collar may not only cause irritation to the animal, especially in the summer months, it could also cause the animal difficulty breathing.
So rather than have your pet go blue in the face – makes sure it’s collar is right!

Micro chipping

May 25th, 2010 by Peter

It must be quite a trauma if your dog or cats go awol – for all the family really, wondering if it’s just gone for a little adventure or if its sadly been knocked down by a car.

So, what can be done to avoid this heartbreak? Surprisingly there is a straight-forward answer that you can do.

If you make a visit to your local vet most of them will offer a micro chipping service This is where an implant, which is only the size of a grain of rice, is injected under your pet’s skin. This stores all the pets details – name, address, phone numbers etc that can then be used used to trace you – its rightful owner!

The procedure doesn’t cost much and is fairly quick and straight forward and although it won’t actually stop them from taking a little wonder, It will certainly increase the chances that you will have your beloved companion returned.

Stage Dogs

May 17th, 2010 by Peter

I don’t know if you’ve been watching it but the latest show on BBC – Over the Rainbow is all about finding a new star to play Dorothy in Andrew Lloyds Webers new show ‘ The Wizard of OZ’

But as well as a leading lady they also have to find a leading dog to play Toto. The producers interviewed all kinds of breeds of dogs. They’ve had to be able to perform tricks, even perform the famous scene of taking the curtain in their mouths and drawing it back to make the

As the pressure mounts for the girls who are following their Dream role this week I bet the pressure is also rising for the doggies in line for the star role too!

Pet Holidays!

May 10th, 2010 by Peter

Even pets get to go on holiday these days. Not to the kennels either – oh no more and more people are holidaying that bit closer to home to makes sure their pets can join them too!

A recent survey of 6,000 pet owners around the world owned up to taking pets on holiday at least once a year and some once a month!

Many hotels now cater and allow for pets to be included so if you’re allergic to animals – watch out for this

It’s not hard to work out that pets in an aeroplane can be miserable for all involved, but Pet Travel is still becoming increasing and popular industry to be in.

Left or right handed pets?

April 30th, 2010 by Peter

One of the latest pets studies has revealed that even they can be left or right handed – Cats, dogs, parrots and even fish have been included.

Many cats were played with for weeks on end to find out that the females were mainly are ‘right-handed’ whilst toms of the pack seemed to favour the left.

Hormones have a lot to answer for as up until the dogs are spayed or neutered, bitches are right handed and dogs are left. Poor things probably wonder which way to turn when there bits are taken away from them!

The best way to see what hand your goldfish is, is to place an unfamiliar object into the tank and see which way it swims round it!

Open windows in the car

April 29th, 2010 by Peter

It looks so cool when your speeding down the country lanes and your dog has it’s head hanging out of the window doesn’t it? But you are doing them more damage than you probably realise.

Its a huge mistake allowing your dog to stick their heads out as not only is the wind harmful to their eyes but also the dust and small rocks which fly up fro the road could lead to lasting damage too. You need to think about their ears aswell as these are a lot more sensitive than ours. High speed winds could end up with a traumatised dog ear!

So before you take your pet on a ride in the car, consider its safety as well as your own and your other passengers.

Buckle up your pets!

April 29th, 2010 by Peter

You get in the car and you buckle up. Your kids get in the back and they buckle up. So why would you put your dog in the back seat and not buckle them up to? OK, so they may lay down on the seat or on the floor, but it only takes for them to get a little excited or restless and they’re jumping about all over the place. A disaster and crash waiting to happen.

Recent stats show that pet related accidents are increasing so making sure they are buckled up could possibly save this from happening and stop your pet from flying through your windscreen.

You can easily buy pet restrainers and barriers from pet stores to ensure they are comfortable as well as safe for those car journeys.

Why we’re not having a dog!

April 28th, 2010 by Peter

Following on from the time and cost blog below I have to agree that most people don’t realise what is actually involved in looking after a pet – my 7 year old included!

He loves dogs and would like one of his own – although my excuse has always been that a 2 bedroom house just isn’t big enough plus we couldn’t leave it on its own all day whilst we’re at school and work. These excuses didn’t wash – the persuasion still kept coming.

However, we were both out walking my one of my girl friends and her little dog – well my son loved it. He was chasing him over – throwing sticks for him etc and still kept asking if we could have one. This was until he noticed my friend using the poop scoop! he asked what she was doing, so I explained, and he then went very quiet. A few minutes later – he said Mummy – I don’t want a dog any more it’s OK! Bingo!
