Pet memories

November 5th, 2010 by Peter

People deal with the loss of a pet very differently. Some people immediately go out and decide to get a replacement and some people decide that it’s too painful and that they can’t stand the thought of getting another pet again. When my Gran’s dog died she decided that nothing could ever replace him, so she commissioned a local sculptor to create a statue of him in clay and to this day it sits by her fire looking very much like the living dog used to. This is a lovely way to remember a loved pet and reminds her of him every day .

1 cat never goes out

September 23rd, 2010 by Peter

At home we have 2 cats. One of our cats always goes outside whenever he can. He has never used a litter tray and goes out all the time unless it is really heavily raining or if there is snow of any kind. He loves the summer, crawls up in a corner and soaks up the heat. In winter he still goes out. Our other cat however NEVER goes out, she moans at our other cat when he goes out and she waits up for him. It’s like an old fashioned relationship apart from the fact she doesn’t cook his meals. If she did, I would be scared.

Keeping Fish

September 22nd, 2010 by Peter

Recently I went round to my friend’s house and she had 2 fish. The tank was a reasonable size really and she hadn’t envisaged any problems with the size or environment as she had received good advice from the place where the fish were bought. However only a few days later both the fish had died and this was apparently due to the fact that there wasn’t enough space in the tank for the two of them to survive. They killed each other in the end, I’m not sure how but for future reference it is crucial to check the size of the tank and species of fish to ensure they have a decent living environment.

Giving your cat a trim

September 15th, 2010 by Peter

The other day it was quite clear that our Persian cat needed a trim. So we got out the brush, the scissors and a comb and starting trimming away at the lengthy hairs that our cat has! After giving him flea treatment 2 weeks ago it was still apparent that he was still unhappy with the length of his coat of fur. He got his paw stuck in the fur the other day which was the last straw for him. He needed a trim, so we did it the other night and now he looks much better – but the fur will grow back quickly no doubt.

What your cat wants

September 9th, 2010 by Peter

If you have a cat you will know that they are not as needy as dogs. They don’t require constant attention and in a human sense seem much more “grown up”. My two cats are very different. one still uses a litter tray and doesn’t like going out, the other is always outside, exploring and doing whatever cats do. At the end of the day though they both look forward to being fed and pampered. If there is somewhere warm for them to lie down at night and they get fed regularly this is usually enough to keep your cat happy! Of course the odd cuddle with your cat does no harm and in fact if they are like mine they will love it!

Giving your cat flea treatment

September 6th, 2010 by Peter

Every now and again it is vital that cats are given treatment for fleas they may have. If you have noticed your cat itching itself with its tongue or almost biting the hair quite a lot then there is a chance they may have fleas. I recently gave my cat the flea treatment and you have to be prepared for them not to trust you for a day or so afterwards. They don’t like being held down while you place the liquid on their back of their necks (the only place they can’t reach to lick it off) so they don’t trust you to stroke them for a while afterwards.

well looked after dogs

June 20th, 2010 by Peter

I have never really thought about writing a will before. Its one of those things which I think us “youngsters” of today think is something we only need to think about when we get older.
I read an interesting article this week which suggested an American heiress, who died earlier this year, had left her mansion along with her trust fund to her three dogs.
The woman apparantly advised the money could be split between her personal aides who would be allowed to live in the mansion (rent free) as long as they continued to look after her dogs.

Pet Hotels

June 19th, 2010 by Peter

It can be a real dilemma when you want to get abroad for a week of two of sunshine, but you have to consider who is going to look after your beloved pet???!
Not everyone can rely on friends and families to help them out, and kennels can be expensive. Personally I always worry about leaving my pet when I go away on holiday and it breaks my heart to see his sad face when I leave him at the kennels.
Now however if I preferred, (and could afford to) I could put my pet pooch in a hotel whilst I am away!
Hotels for dogs are becoming more popular and many of them will ensure your pets are pampered beyond their wildest dreams, with Flat Screen TVs , climbing fames and in some cases a pool! No need to feel guilty anymore then!

Noisy pets can be expensive!

June 18th, 2010 by Peter

We all know how annoying it can be when you are woken in the middle of the night by your next door neighbours pets making loud noises. For most of us though, this is such an irregular occurrence you dont mind it too much and you just roll over and go back to sleep.
Unfortunately this is not the case for some neighbours in Southampton who claim their lives have been made a “living hell” due to dogs in the neighbourhood barking approximately 800 times an hour. Consequently the owners of the pets have been fined £2000 for disturbing residents in their local area after complaints were made.

Pet parrot rescused from Lion enclosure

June 18th, 2010 by Peter

A parrot which escaped from a cage in his owners back garden, has been rescued from the lion enclosure at Warminster Safari park, Longleat. The African Grey Parrot, which is nine years old was rescued by the keepers at the park after it had spent three days in the wild. A parrot expert was called in, and a resident female parrot was used to try and temp the parrot from the fence, unfortunately their attempts failed and they had to resort to using a large ensure the parrot was moved to safety.
